Remember

“I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.” -Psalm 77:11

Psalm 77

The first several verses of today’s psalm describe a time when the psalmist was in what can only be described as absolute agony. His soul refused to be comforted (verse 2). He couldn’t sleep or talk (verse 4). He was left asking, “Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more? Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies?” (verses 7-9). Those questions speak for themselves as to where the psalmist was at spiritually and how miserable he was.

Then something happened. The psalmist started remembering. He started remembering the works and wonders of the Lord (verses 10-11). He started meditating on the work of the Lord and talking about His doings (verse 12). And, as he started reflecting on the Lord’s wonders and works in the past, soon, he wasn’t asking if the Lord’s promise failed, if His mercy was gone, or if He’d forgotten to be gracious. No, soon, he was asking, “…who is so great a God as our God?” (verse 13). Soon, he was proclaiming, “Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people” (verse 14).

When we’re as low as we’ve ever been, when, like the psalmist, we’re in agony, there’s comfort to be found in remembering. Remembering God’s faithfulness, remembering His works and incredible wonders on behalf of His people in the past will remind us of the greatness of our God and increase our faith and trust. We’ll experience sweet relief and precious peace. We’ll be confident the Lord will see us through again.

Take comfort in remembering.
